Design With Jen: Home Design & Organizing
You’re standing in your bedroom and looking around at the mess. Clothes and clutter everywhere, then you go to your closet and same thing but worse. You have no idea what to wear because you can’t clearly see what you own. You are already late for work and taking your children to school. You quickly grab something off the floor to wear and hope that it is clean.
Has this scenario ever happened to you? Are you currently going through this now? Are you shaking your head and you just don’t know where to start, how to start, or who to call? This is a very common concern for many people. If you are going through this, know that you are not alone and there are professional organizers that can help you dig out of your clutter.
Today, I’m going to walk you through a short checklist of where to start and how to attack your cluttered spaces.
How To Get Started De-Cluttering
Have trash bags, boxes, baskets and organizers available and ready to be utilized
Start at the beginning of the room and work your way to the other end.
Two of the easiest things to identify are trash and dirty laundry. These two categories are the quickest items to get out of your way while cleaning up your space.
As you fill up trash bags of trash, take them outside to your trash can. DON’T leave them in the room you are working in, or inside your home. The idea is to start clearing the floor as you are picking things up. This will help you to see the progress you are making.
Next, you will have 2 categories: “Keep” and “Donate”. Subcategories to these could be “giving to a family member” or “selling”, etc.
Utilize your organizers and/or boxes to start sorting through your space. Again, start at the beginning of the room and work to the other end.
As you find items that go to other rooms, take them to that room and put them away. DON’T create piles in the room that you are decluttering. Piles will only confuse you and make you feel defeated at the end of the day. The idea of this process is that you are clearing and cleaning up the room you are decluttering.
Once you have everything cleaned up, now its time to clean the room. Vacuuming and dusting gives the room a clean feel and smell. This will help you feel like you have accomplished what you set out to do.
Now that you have your room cleaned up, it’s time to donate those boxes of donations and/or give items to family members or friends. One of the worst things to do is to leave the boxes in your basement or the room that you just cleaned up. You are looking for a fresh start to decluttering your home, and these boxes are only reminders of what you were frustrated with from the beginning.
Conclusion
This is just a short checklist of how to get started. If you have more than one room or your whole house needs to be decluttered. DON’T get overwhelmed!! Start with one room a day, work through each room 100% each day. By completing one room a day, you are not overwhelming yourself or your family thinking that you must get the whole house done in one day. Also, by doing one room a day, this will give you motivation each day to complete the next room!
If you just can’t do this by yourself, remember that there are professional organizers that can help you declutter and organize.
